- : would be nice now.
-
- I think the prototype that is going to be displayed at CeBIT96 will be the
- amiga lowend for the forseeable future. AT can't make cheap a1200s, they
- certainly can't make cheap PPC machines. So the close proximity of the release
- dates means little.
-
- :>I would suggest it`s a possibility. AT should have known the reaction of the

-
- : Yes, having the A1200 at the right price would be good but having a
- : better speced 1200 at a decent price also would be even better!
-
- True, if you can't make something cheaper than a fully decked out P75 machine
- then you have to compete with it on a hardware basis. The OS goes so far to
- compensate, what is left has to be made up in real hardware from AT.
-
- :>rigidlyto their IMHO unreasonable price structure, you could reasonably expect

-
- : The last time I checked the UK pounds and Canadian dollar is in a 1:2
- : ratio so 700 pounds would be around $1400 Canadian would it not? I
- : certainly hope the A1200Plus/A1300 isn't going to be too much over $1000.
-
- I would bet it will be around the $2000 CDN mark myself, new product and all
- that. [Refering to the unnamed lowend prototype to be displayed at CeBIT96]
-
- : All that is really needed is to be able to add a graphics card, easily
- : connect a CD-ROM drive without rendering something else useless and
- : easily add more memory (same as last point) and still offering a way to
- : increase the CPU. The original A1300 design wouldn't have allowed for
- : all of that so the new design is better and hopefully will be priced
- : right. In the March CU Amiga in one of the Points Of View sections, the
- : author suggested combining an accelarator with a graphics board for the
- : trap door (and he suggested some possibilities on how to do this), then
- : the SIMM sockets on the motherboard could handle the RAM expansion and
- : the PCMCIA port could be left for the CD-ROM drive.
-
- The cost of such a combined board would be unsellable, and you would be stuck
- with what you got. Toaster users don't use a1200s. :)
-
- : Yes, the price has GOT to be right!
-
- Maybe AT's right price is still too high, maybe they just can't make cheap
- machines.
-
- : Yes the announcement of the A1300 did affect A1200 sales and hopefully AT
- : will get the new A1300 right in easily expanding to the next generation
- : Amigas when the time comes or no one will fork out the money if they have
- : to buy yet another computer the following year!
-
- They have to solve the problem of amiga upgrades feeling like buying a new
- computer every year. :) The PPC card from Phase V, the lowend model, is
- supposed to be around $1000 CDN, ditto for the current 040 card for the a1200.
- You spend the price of a new computer and you don't get a new computer.
-
- Perhaps Phase V should start making computers instead of cards. :) Why do they
- need an amiga peripheral for? :) It is more of a case of buying an amiga to
- connect to the cpu card than the reverse. :)
-
- If AT sold a machine with a svga card, hard drive, cd-rom, simm sockets, and
- the 030 @ >40Mhz, taking the os into account they could have a fairly
- adequate home computer to sell. If they could sell them for $800 CDN and make
- a profit, it would be the way to go, although I get the feeling they wouldn't
- be able to make c64s for less than $400 CDN. :) The prototype mentioned
- satisfies most of the specs I mentioned but I doubt a svga card will be a
- possibility, I think AT will be shooting itself in the foot with a proprietary
- slot scheme.
